Annual Friendship Day in St. James’s Parish Dublin 8, Ireland

In 2004 there was a big non national population in St. James’ Parish – people from India, the Phillipines, Eastern Europe, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda and South Africa. To help the people get to know each other and mix more the Parish Team decided to host a Friendship Day . Now, seven years later this Friendship Day continues.

This year the celebration was held on 13th March. Notices were sent to all the shops and schools. People were invited to dress in national costume and to bring a national food dish. Locals donated soft drinks, sweets and food. Phillipino men promised to look after the barbecues. Local ladies decorated the parish hall and local talent promised music, face painting for children, Irish dancing, and a clown.

As the time drew near, the Parish Team wondered would anyone turn up! They needn’t have worried. Crowds arrived, language barriers were overcome, and food was shared. There was singing, dancing and sharing experiences, traditions and food recipes. The local people were delighted to improve their knowledge of all the visitors from other shores, and the visitors felt accepted and happy and hoped the Friendship Day would become an annual event. And so it has.

The reigning Lord Mayor of Dublin often attends the celebration and also local T.D’s, the Gardai, local clergy and Religious. Some of the original overseas population have moved on to other countries or returned home but new arrivals are always welcome in St. James'.
