| Who we are |
|
We are a congregation of religious women, founded in Ireland in 1815 by Mary Aikenhead. As well as taking vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, we have since the beginning, taken a fourth vow - ‘Service of the Poor’. We are women of faith who have been called by God to proclaim the good news in our time with passion and enthusiasm. We believe, that as we follow in the footsteps of Mary Aikenhead today that the love of Christ continues to urge us on.
that we have a special contribution to make in our universe and our world as we trust in a God who is ever present, tirelessly working with us for the good of the whole human race and the good of our planet. Our Foundress: Mary Aikenhead was born in Cork on the 19th January 1787. Her mother, Mary Stacpole, was a Roman Catholic, while her father, David Aikenhead was a Scottish Protestant. As women of faith we believe that God is calling us to reach out with the compassion of Christ to all, especially the most vulnerable and those in need. Is calling us to respect and reverence the whole of creation, the cultures and traditions of every race and nation, moving us beyond our fears and prejudices as we try to respond to the needs of our times. (General Chapter 2001) Our Mission: Our mission is corporate and is to follow the poor Christ who knew pain and rejection. Christ whose loving surrender redeemed our broken world. In a spirit of creative fidelity to the love Mary Aikenhead had for Christ and for the poor our mission is to speak out boldly against all forms of injustice wherever we are and in whatever we do. Our mission is to be women of prayer fired with a passion to free others to know that they are greatly loved ( General Chapter 2001)... read more Our Motto: Our motto is taken from the second letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians - Caritas Christi Urget Nos (5:14). This has been variously translated as: The Charity/Love of Christ urges us on / impels us / is our driving force ... read more
